Team South Africa riders Graham Winn and Paul Hart, as well as Martyn Swanepoel and Hayley Parker rode this weekend at the Compiegne CCI 2*.  Douglas and Heidi did not compete as they rode last weekend at Saumur.
Paul was first in of the South African riders in the dressage, and was followed by Mark Todd, indicating the high level of competition at which Team South Africa is competing. Our riders put in respectable dressage tests, leaving them placed towards the middle of the field.
The cross country was tough, and the course eliminated a significant proportion of the riders, including Michael Jung (the eventual winner on one of his horses), on his other horse.    Unfortunately, Graham and Zorba were casualties of the cross country course, and were eliminated after a fall.  Paul put in a careful clear round, providing the South African riders with their only clear, and giving us all something to cheer about.  Martyn and Hayley had one stop each.
The show jumping was also tough, with each of the three remaining South African riders taking 3 poles.  Overall, our riders finished respectably, holding their heads high and showing that South African riders and horses can compete with the best in the world.  This was another major step forward along the road to the World Equestrian Games.
