South Africans turning heads at Saumur CCI 3*
The South African Riders and Supporters have been turning heads at the Saumur CCI 3* in France this weekend (21, 22 and 23 May 2010).  They even featured as a news article on the front page of the Saumur website, including a small interview from the coach, Jean-Philippe Camboulives:

"Since the start of the 25th CCI*** competition at Saumur, the South-African riders have been able to count on their loyal supporters to encourage and support them.
You can’t miss them when you arrive at Verrie; the wing-mirrors of their 4x4 sport the South-African colours. And when they get out the car, they are all wearing yellow and green and carrying flags. They are behind the riders and support them at every moment.
‘The group is in France for six months’ explains Jean-Philippe Camboulives, their French coach. ‘As they are all entered here at Saumur, their families have come to support them. The owners of the horses are here as well. It can only improve their moral!'"

The presence of our flags and supporters aside, our riders have been holding their own in the event.  Graham Winn was best of the South African riders after dressage, with an excellent score of 58.60 penalties.  The cross country course was maximum height and very challenging, and saw many refusals and eliminations.  Unfortunately, Heidi Wood fell victim to a skinny on an offset corner after a water jump and was eliminated. Martyn Swanepoel retired after a couple of refusals and Graham Winn and Paul Hart both picked up jumping penalties for refusals in the cross country.  Douglas Welsh put in an excellent round to be the only South African rider to go clear in the country and to be the best South African rider lying 27th out of about 41 starters in the country.

Three of our five riders in the CCI 3* go forward to the show jumping phase.  We wish them the best of luck and know that they will keep flying our flag high.

The event can be followed on the internet at http://www.saumur.org.
